Ace Of Spades
The Ace of Spades!
This is a very attractive Corben Baby Ace 'D' Model with wheel pants. Wheel pants make the Baby Ace look streamlined and increase the flying speed by a few knots (or mph) too. A pilot needs to be careful when landing on grass airstrips to make sure that the grass is reasonably mowed to avoid the snag of weeds or tall grass against the wheel pants (especially fiberglass wheel pants). Likewise, muddy conditions are not suited well for wheel pants and can clog the pants with mud causing the airplane to nose over onto the propeller. I had a pair of wheel pants just like these on two of my Piper J-3 Cubs back in the late 1970s and never had a moment’s problem even on grass. I love the looks of 8:00 x 4:00 wheels and tires (as used on the J-3) covered by fat, stubby wheel pants of this type! [Baby Ace Man].

Two pretty Baby Aces Fly In Perfect Formation
A pair of Aces beat Kings!
Mike Pastore leads "The Ace of Spades" in this beautiful formation photo. The airplane in the background was for sale recently; see the advertisement above.
This shot is really beautiful. Flying in formation is not for the inexperienced. Mid air collisions have occurred on more than one occassion even where experienced pilots attempt it. Each year at the EAA Oshkosh, Wisconsin 'Fly-In' the pilots are all briefed prior to every exhibition flight, especially relative to formation flying. My recollection is that one airplane is always the lead plane that will not make any abrupt changes in the flight plan without same having been completely reviewed prior to take off. The following airplane then can feel more comfortable about closure toward the lead airplane (I am not an expert on formation flying and invite commentary from those airshow pilots that might add their knowledge to formal "formation flying" techniques).
