This looks like a well built airplane.
Another nice picture of a nice project! A good work area like this one is a must. Having a place to work indoors and to organize and store your parts and pieces is essential. A good work table would be handy as a good spot to review drawings, logs, paperwork and manuals. When buying a homebuilt airplane or project always inspect all of the steel tubing and welded joints . If the airplane is already covered - at least check the welding at all of the structural attach points. The quality of those welded joints is all that there is betwwen you and terra frima when it comes to critical wing attach points, cabane struts, etc. Also remember that steel can rust from the inside out. Investigate the process for drilling, adding hot linseed oil, draining and welding the weepholes to preserve the life of the tubing, especially on wing struts and landing gear tubing.
Yep... this could be for me!
Already has 650 proven flight hours!
This panel layout is not the best looking but it allows for the neat installation of a radio. I would prefer a normal panel layout with the radio mounted down low on the left sidewall someplace within site and reach. I never had a radio whatsoever in either of my two Baby Ace airplanes. I never needed one either. Of course I was flying out of a non-controlled rural airport known as 'Scott Field' in Tallulah, Louisiana - back in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Those were the good ole days!
I can see myself pretending to be the Red Barron in this!
A project can save hundreds of hours!
Someone should have covered the gear legs! I have seen several Baby Ace photos with uncovered gear legs and find them very unattractive. That would not stop me from buying an airplane I liked otherwise, but I would spend the first available weekend covering and painting the landing gear to match the airframe. One essential thing to check would be to see if the horizontal top cross framing is welded across the top of each leg to receive covering, otherwise you would have to block-up the airplane, remove the gear and do some welding in order to fascilitate covering the legs. That might be OK since it provide a good chance to add brackets for wheel pants. If you look at Baby Ace pictures that have wheel pants - it makes all the difference in the world in looks! I have flown J-3 cubs with fibreglass wheel pants out of grass fields without any undue problems, as long as the filed is kept mowed.
All the parts and pieces!
Everything appears to be there including the engine eyebrows!
If you purchased or own this project and have anything to tell us about it please e-mail
Guy Foster at [email protected]with the details. I would love to see a picture of this airplane complete and flying! Speaking of flying please see the beautiful flying shot of a Baby Ace above or on my home page. Now that is the way to photograph an airplane!
