Mechanic's Illustrated's Original Baby Ace
The Mechanic's Illustrated Baby Ace Model 'C' 1955
Our Baby Ace (was donated):
This simple, parasol design has become a favorite homebuilt airplane due to its low construction cost, and ease of flying.
In 1955, the Experimental Aircraft Association (the EAA) published a series of drawings and instructions in Mechanix Illustrated magazine.
At that time (in 1955), the entire airplane could be completed for $800 (about $8,000 in 2010 dollars) however the real cost of building one today, even if you are a really good scrounger, might run a tad over $8,000 owing to prices of all aircraft goods going up more than inflation. Suffice it to say that if you can find a nice Baby Ace airplane already flying for $10,000 or so you are essentially getting all of the labor free (continued below).

Our 1972 Baby Ace
A 'parasol' design offers a great view!
A "parasol" design places the wing above the cockpit without any cabin structure. So the pilot has an incredible 360 degree view. Open cockpits, and parasols were quite popular in the 1920s and 30s
Our Baby Ace was donated to us by the original owner/builder. It first flew in 1972, and was flown regularly ever since. It currently has over 1000, trouble free, hours in the log book. Over 50 pilots have flown this particular airplane, attesting to its easy flying qualities.
Powered by a 65hp Continental engine, it weighs 575 pounds, empty. It cruises comfortably at nearly 100 mph and stalls around 40 mph. It has nice flying characteristics and all of our CCAF pilots that have flown it have found it to be delightful. This is our newest addition to our collection; it was delivered to us in September of 2007. We are delighted to be given the honor of caring for it for the future.
