The price is right and the airplane is flown frequently.
A show plane isn't for everybody. When an airplane is too nice some pilots are afraid to get them dirty. Nothing like a good pea patch flyer for those soft grass airstrips! I don't think you could build a Baby Ace for $8,500 without doing an awful lot of good scrounging and hustling for a decent engine, prop (price one of those lately), tubing, steel plate, aircraft quality wood, wheel, brakes, instruments, tailwheel, tires, tubes, wheels and brakes not to mention fabric and paint. Did I leave out tools, welding equipment, oxygen and acetelyne, welding rods, spray paint equipment, strut tubing, bracing wires, cables, fittings, 'AN' type hardware, gas tank, gascolator, carb heat box, throttle, controls, floor boards, upholstery, windshield, plans and all the paperwork? Even with this list you would be surprised at how many other tidbits are required to build your own airplane! Even if you could do it all for $8,500.... what about the labor, postage, gasoline running around, etc. that is required? Now you see why some Baby Ace airplane Owners ask as much as $14,000 for their airplanes. Even that larger amount sounds fair relatively speaking.
So... who needs a show plane?
